Vertical Imagery
Getmapping provides expert vertical imagery (also known as NADIR), that captures greater accuracy and detail than even the highest-resolution satellite imagery.
Clear Views for Confident Decisions
Vertical imagery is captured from a straight‑down perspective. This creates a reliable and uniform view of the ground that supports precise mapping and feature detection. Our historical archive helps users understand change over time and supports long‑term planning.
What is Vertical Imagery?
Vertical imagery is collected from an aircraft using a high‑resolution camera mounted directly underneath. The camera records reflected light in red, green, blue, and, in some cases, near‑infrared wavelengths. Data is captured at resolutions from 5cm to 25cm and is ortho‑rectified with accurate height and GPS data to ensure correct positioning.

Key Benefits of Vertical Imagery
- Map Accuracy: Orthorectified vertical imagery supports highly accurate spatial measurements.
- Large-Scale Coverage: Efficiently captures extensive areas for infrastructure planning and asset management.
- Consistent Perspective: Ideal for combining with other geospatial data or comparing with previous aerial surveys to monitor change.
- Planning and Development: Crucial for local authority planning, transport route design, and land use classification.
- Historical Comparison: Supports time-based studies by comparing past and present vertical captures.

Why Choose Getmapping for Vertical Imagery?
Our CityView content program captures the major towns and cities in the UK at ultra-high 5cm resolution, updated every year to ensure currency.
Our NationalView content program captures Great Britain at 12.5cm resolution, delivering the only true-colour, seamless aerial map of the region. The imagery is updated on a regular basis, ensuring no area is older than three years, supporting reliable analysis and decision-making across sectors.
Example Applications of Vertical Imagery
- Urban Planning: Support zoning, infrastructure design, and land use decisions with accurate aerial views.
- Environmental Monitoring: Track changes in vegetation, water bodies, and land cover over time.
- Utilities & Infrastructure: Map assets and plan maintenance across transport and utility networks.
- Insurance & Risk Assessment: Assess property conditions and post-event damage with high-resolution imagery.
- Historical Analysis: Compare past and present imagery to visualise change and inform long-term planning.
